Scalloped potatoes are a classic comfort food dish made with thinly sliced potatoes baked in a creamy sauce, often with cheese. Here’s a simple recipe to get you started:
Ingredients
– 4 large potatoes, Yukon gold or russet work well
– 1 onion, this is optional
– 2 tablespoons of butter
– 2 cup of milk or heavy cream
– 1 to 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
– 1/2 teaspoon of salt and pepper for taste
– ¼ teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
– Garlic powder, thyme, or nutmeg (optional, for added flavor)
Instructions
Preheat the Oven: preheat your over to 350°F (175°C)
Prepare the Potatoes: peel and thinly slice the potatoes, about 1/8 inch thick. If you opted to use onions, slice them now as well
Make Sauce in the Saucepan: in a saucepan, heat the cream or milk over low heat. Add half of the cheese, salt, pepper and any additional seasonings you prefer. Stir until the cheese is melted and the mixture is smooth
Layer the Dish: In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by half of the onion (if using). Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Repeat with the remaining potatoes, onions and sauce.
Bake: cover the dish with foil and bake for about 45 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining cheese on top. Bake for an additional 15- 20 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly
Serve: let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your scalloped potatoes
