As the weather grows colder, we are excited to introduce weekly comforting potato recipes that are delicious, nutritious, and perfect for the entire family. The first recipe we are sharing is classic mashed potatoes.
Mashed Potatoes
Mashed potatoes are a classic comfort food! They are typically made by boiling peeled potatoes until tender, then mashing them with butter, milk, salt, and pepper to create a creamy texture. You can also enhance their flavour by adding garlic, cheese, or herbs.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds of potatoes, Russets, or Yukon Gold work well
- ½ cup of milk
- 4 tablespoons of butter – more can be added if you prefer your potatoes richer
- Salt and pepper for taste
- Additional optional ingredients can include garlic, cream, sour cream or cheese
Instructions
Peel and Cut Potatoes: Peel the potatoes and cut them into roughly equal-sized chunks (about 1-2 inches).
Boil: Place the potatoes in a large pot and add enough water to cover them. Bring the water to a boil and add a pinch of salt. Cover and cook for about 15-20 minutes or until fork tender.
Drain: Drain the potatoes in a colander and let them sit for a minute to allow excess steam to escape.
Mash: Return the potatoes to the pot or a mixing bowl. Add the butter and begin mashing with a potato masher. For the creamiest potatoes, use a hand masher or potato ricer.
Add Milk: Gradually add milk while mashing until you reach your desired consistency. A good tip is to pre-heat the milk in a small saucepan or microwave before adding it to the potatoes.
Season: Stir in salt and pepper to taste. You can add optional ingredients like roasted garlic or cheese.
Serve: Serve warm and enjoy!
