Mashed sweet potatoes are beloved because they’re so versatile. They pair well with roasted meats and grilled chicken dishes. They’re an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys a slightly sweet, creamy side dish. Whether you keep them simple or make them indulgent with extras, mashed sweet potatoes are always a comforting, crowd-pleasing dish.
Ingredients:
– 4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
– 4 tbsp of butter
– ¼ cup of milk or cream
– 1-2 tbsp of maple syrup
– Salt and pepper for taste
– ½ tsp of cinnamon, optional based on preference
– ¼ tsp of nutmeg
Instructions:
Peel and Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into roughly 1-inch cubes to ensure even cooking.
Cook the Sweet Potatoes: Place the cubed sweet potatoes into a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt to the water and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender and can be easily pierced with a knife.
Drain and Mash: Drain the cooked sweet potatoes well and return them to the pot. Mash the sweet potatoes using a potato masher or a fork until they are smooth and creamy. For an extra-smooth texture, you can use an electric mixer.
Add Butter and Cream: Stir in the butter and milk (or cream). For a richer taste, use cream or half-and-half instead of milk. Add maple syrup if you want a touch of sweetness. This pairs wonderfully with the natural flavor of the sweet potatoes.
Season: Add cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and pepper to taste. These spices add warmth and depth to the flavor, but feel free to adjust the quantities according to your preference.
Serve: Spoon the mashed sweet potatoes into a serving bowl and top with an extra pat of butter if desired. Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon or even some chopped pecans for added texture.
